The Gerber family is from Fort Wayne, IN. Adam and Lisa send their kids, Christian and Kara, to summer camp this year. Kara attended the junior high session of camp and it had a huge impact on her life. In fact, it’s her story that originally clued us in about the Gerber family. After Kara’s week at camp, she went home and was excited to make her faith her own. She began memorizing scripture, sharing Jesus with her friends, and reading her Bible more. That’s so exciting! Her brother, Christian, came to camp a few weeks later for the Camp Aide program. Christian was able to deepen his understanding of the Gospel while he was here through teaching time and studying God’s word with other camp aides.

Hearing these stories made us wonder what kind of impact this has on parents? We had to find out. After making the drive to Fort Wayne, we were greeted by a bunch of happy Gerbers who shared a meal with us. During dinner, we were able to explain the Keeping Faith campaign and share how the Gerber family fit into it. After dinner, we interviewed Adam and Lisa. They expressed how meaningful the ministry of camp has been to their family. They know leaders at camp so they don’t worry about the messages their kids will receive – they know truth is being taught. Lisa shared that one of the most exciting things to see is when the kids come home excited to deepen their faith. She said it’s evident that they are making their faith their own and no longer going through the motions. They see the fruit in how they interact with friends, study their Bibles, and share Jesus with people.

Meeting with the Gerbers made us┬árealize that camp isn’t just for the kids – it’s for families. Our mission is to facilitate life-change by helping people draw close to God. If the kids take this mentality home from camp, imagine how many families are experiencing life-change? The Gerber family is one of many that has the opportunity to let summer camp act as a ripple effect and let it impact their churches and communities. We think that’s pretty cool.
