OAP Student Programming

In our programs, students are encouraged to observe and appreciate the environment and people around them. Younger groups focus on hands-on observation and interaction with nature. Elements of team building and self-discovery are added to the older students' outdoor experience. Groups customize their learning adventure through curriculum options (see below) and activity options. Material and content are always age-level appropriate. Teachers and chaperones participate for free. Our curriculum options help meet state standards.

Discovering Birds

This is an introductory session on the birds of Michigan.  We will spend time identifying the features of birds. Our time will be divided between the Creation Center viewing birds through a wall of one way glass and finding birds along the nature trails. Who knows? We may get a bird's eye view.

Amphibians and Reptiles

This class is an intriguing study of the unique design of amphibians and reptiles. We will talk about their features and even get to touch some of them.  We will search around Little Bankson Lake for a live encounter with one of these amazing creatures. Plan a night class and listen to frog symphony in the marsh!

Explore the Marsh

This is a hands-on class where we will look, feel, see, and smell the environment of a marsh.  We will use nets to catch frogs, minnows, and aquatic insects.  We will also look at the plant life that grows in the marshes. This is an exciting learning adventure.

Animal Tracks and Signs

There are a lot of activities going on all around us in the woods, all we need to do is look.  In this session we will learn to identify tracks that animals have left behind. We will also explore trails looking for signs of animal activity such as deer rubs and nests. At the end of this class students will be able to take home plaster of paris track sets.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Stars

This class can be held during the day or night. During the day we would discuss what a star is and watch a program about our universe. The night time class would be held outside where we would find different constellations and talk about the universe God created.

Looking Closer

This is an exciting program where the kids will be given magnifying lenses and explore the smaller parts of nature around them. The kids look under rocks, around trees, and in the grass for a view of nature not normally seen.  This is a hands and knees adventure.

Five Sense Hike

This adventuresome hike is designed to help students understand what God has created around them by using their five senses of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell.

Night Exploration

This is a unique opportunity for students to understand where those night sounds are coming from. We will walk out into the woods and learn about animals that move at night.  We hopefully will catch a glimpse of a nocturnal animal.

Basic Camping Skills

The students in this class will learn how to “tread lightly” through the woods and set up camp.  They will practice the skills of fire building and cooking over a fire. This course teaches kids how to be a good steward of the environment.

Orienteering

In this class students will learn the parts of a compass and how to use the instrument.  Then we will adventure into the woods for an exciting game that will challenge by putting to use what they have learned.

Trees Around Us

Trees are one of the most vital parts of our would. In this class we will talk about some of the things that trees do for us. We will head to the woods, identifying the differnt parts of a tree as well as pointing out various species. We may even travel to the canopy of the forest.
